Saltwater Fishing

Best Tips to Start Saltwater Fishing in South Africa: From Rock to Reef

There’s nothing quite like the tug of a saltwater fish on your line. It’s unpredictable, powerful, and wildly addictive. Whether casting from the beach, balancing on a rocky ledge, or heading offshore for yellowfin, saltwater fishing in South Africa offers something for every angler, if you’re starting, or even if you’ve been at it for years but want to better your skills, these tips will help you hook more and waste less.

Know Your Waters

South Africa’s coastline is split between two oceans and countless environments. Before you even tie your first hook, ask yourself: where am I fishing?

  • Surf fishing is popular along long beaches like Struisbaai, False Bay in Cape Town, Hermanus plaat, Gansbaai plaat and damme in overberg area, St Lucia, and Still Bay. It’s excellent for shad(elf), kob, steenbras and bluefish.
  • Rock fishing is for the more adventurous. Places like Hermanus, False Bay(Cape Town), overberg area, West Coast and the Wild Coast offer blacktail, galjoen, and bronze bream.
  • Estuary fishing, places like Berg river in velddrif, Breederiver in Witsand gives you calmer waters and species like grunter, Elf(Shad), Cob and Garrick.
  • Offshore trips require a boat and a solid stomach. You’ll chase tuna, yellowtail, and dorado.

Each location demands different gear, techniques, and bait, so get familiar with the area before packing your box.

Get the Right Gear

You don’t need a warehouse of rods to get started. One solid setup is enough to start catching.

  • Rod and Reel: A medium-heavy rod paired with a spinning reel with a 4000 to 6000 range is a good starting point. It’s versatile and handles most inshore species.
  • Line: Monofilament is forgiving and easier for beginners, but braid offers strength and sensitivity. Choose based on where you’re fishing and what you’re after.
  • Hooks and Rigs: Keep it simple. Either bait keeper hooks or circle hooks in sizes 1/0 to 5/0 for general surf or rock fishing. Ready-made traces save time if you’re still learning to tie knots.

Ask your local tackle shop if you’re unsure what’s working in your area. At Jacita, we always match the gear to the fish, not the hype.

Learn the Tides and Timing

Tide matters. A lot. Fish feed more during specific tide windows, especially early morning and late afternoon. Learn to read a tide chart. Rising and falling tides both bring baitfish closer to shore, which in turn bring predators. You don’t need to chase spring tides every time, but avoid fishing at dead low or dead high if possible.

Use the Right Bait

You could use lures, but if you’re starting, natural bait gives you a better shot.

  • Sardines, red eye sardines, chokka, octopus tentacles, Mullet and mackerel work almost anywhere.
  • Red bait and mussels are deadly near reefs.
  • Prawns and mud prawn shine in estuaries.

Always match your bait to the species and the spot. Fish aren’t picky, but they’re not fools either.

Master the Cast

You don’t need to cast 100 metres to catch fish. Focus on technique rather than distance. Watch your body posture, load your rod properly, and aim for consistency. Sometimes the fish feed just past the first sandbank, right under your nose.

If you’re struggling, practise in an open field or ask a mate to show you the ropes. Plenty of veteran anglers are happy to share advice.

Safety First, Always

Saltwater fishing can be risky, especially around rocks or when launching a boat. Watch the swell, keep your eyes on the weather, and never fish alone on wild coastlines.

Wear the right shoes, keep a knife on you, and tell someone where you’re going. It’s fishing, not a survival movie.

Respect the Ocean

Take your rubbish with you. Release undersized fish. Follow the regulations. There’s no joy in a freezer full of fish you won’t eat or a beach littered with discarded line.

Keep Learning

Every day on the water teaches you something. Even the blanks. Take notes. Try new spots. Swap techniques. Ask questions. Saltwater fishing rewards patience and persistence more than it does fancy gear.
