Deep Sea Fishing: Yellowtail, Snoek and Swell Watching

Winter hit hard this week with wind and swell making conditions tough across the Cape coastline. Cape Point saw a short-lived snoek run on Monday, but the shoal disappeared quickly. A full snoek season is long overdue, so that glimpse gave us hope.

On the Atlantic side, yellowtail made a welcome appearance near Dassen Island, especially around Pike Rock and S.W. Reefs. Most fish were landed using spinners and vertical jigs, so make sure your tackle box is well stocked. Jacita has all the gear you need, and with Payflex, you can split the cost into four easy payments.

Be cautious, though. Friday’s forecast shows swells over 5 metres, making offshore trips risky. Saturday offers better odds with a smaller 3-metre swell and light wind around Cape Point, Robben Island, and Dassen Island. If you’re planning a weekend braai, this might be your chance to land a decent yellowtail.

Rock and Surf: Galjoen and Belman Ahead

Surf anglers, this weekend is looking promising. Conditions from Friday through Sunday are lining up for strong galjoen and belman action.

Top spots for galjoen include reef-heavy areas between Strandfontein and Macassar. For belman, head along the coast from Eagle Bay through to Witsands. The swell drops steadily by Sunday, making it ideal for beach casting.

Use red bait, mussels and worms. These should produce solid results, especially along the Atlantic Seaboard from Cape Point to Melkbos.
