How to Look After Your Fishing Rod
A fishing rod isn’t just a tool. It’s your connection to the water, the line between you and the catch of the day. Whether you’re casting for bass in a local dam or battling yellowtail offshore, taking proper care of your fishing rod keeps it in top condition and ready for action.
Here’s how to give your rod the care it deserves—before, during, and after every trip.
Rinse After Every Trip
Saltwater is brutal on gear. After each saltwater outing, rinse your rod with De-salt. Use a gentle spray, not a high-pressure blast, and pay close attention to the guides, reel seat, and any moving parts. Let it stand for 2 hours. Even after freshwater sessions, a quick rinse helps remove dust, mud, and plant matter that can damage your rod over time.
Dry It Properly
After rinsing, wipe the rod down with a soft, dry cloth. Let it air dry thoroughly before storing it. Never put your rod away while it’s damp. Trapped moisture can lead to rust, mould, or corrosion, especially around the guides and fittings.
Check the Guides
Rod guides take a lot of wear and tear. Before and after each trip, inspect them closely. Run a cotton bud or a piece of cloth through each guide. If it snags or leaves fibres behind, you’ve likely got a crack or burr that can damage your line. Replace or repair damaged guides as soon as you spot a problem.
Keep It Clean
Every few trips, give your rod a deeper clean. Mix De-salt with warm water and gently wipe down the blank, handle, and reel seat. Use a soft toothbrush for tricky spots. Rinse well and dry completely. Don’t use strong chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as they can scratch or wear down the rod’s finish. After you have dried your rod you can spray it with spanjaard tackle guard spray which gives a protective layer against elements.
Protect the Rod Tip
The tip of your rod is the most delicate part. Be extra careful when loading your rods into the car, storing them in rod racks, or moving through tight spots. It’s easy to catch a tip or knock a guide if you’re not paying attention. A rod sleeve or case is a smart investment, especially if you’re heading out on a long trip or carrying a few rods together. It keeps everything protected and saves you from heartbreak on the water.
Store It Safely
Avoid leaning rods against a wall for long periods, as this can cause warping. Instead, use a rod rack or store them horizontally if space allows.
Never leave your rod in the car on a hot day. Extreme temperatures can damage the rod’s resin, causing it to warp or weaken.
Watch the Reel Seat and Ferrules
If your rod has multiple sections, make sure the ferrules are clean and fit snugly. Wipe them down after each trip and avoid forcing them apart when wet. For the reel seat, check for grit or sand that can cause scratches. A light wipe after each trip keeps it smooth and in good working order.
Handle with Care
Don’t high-stick your rod (lifting it too vertically) when fighting fish. This can snap the tip or cause a crack you won’t notice until it’s too late. Always support the rod properly during casts and fights. Treat it like the fine tool it is, not a broomstick.
A well-cared-for rod lasts longer, performs better, and keeps you fishing for years. A few minutes of care after each trip saves you frustration and money down the line. Look after your rod, and it’ll look after you when the big one hits.
