Western Cape Saltwater Fishing Report: 29 May – 1 June 2025
Spoilt for Choice as Cold Front Moves On
If you’ve been waiting for the perfect post-front fishing window, this weekend is your chance. With yellowtail running strong off Harold’s Bank near Cape Point and mixed shoals of snoek off Lambert’s Bay, saltwater anglers are looking at a buffet of options—especially from Saturday afternoon as the weather clears.
Further north, Port Nolloth continues to produce excellent snoek hauls, a trend that kicked off late last weekend.
Rock and Surf Fishing Update
This weekend’s northerly winds are doing rock and surf anglers a big favour—churning up the inshore seabed, opening gullies and flushing out bait. High tides hit about two hours before dawn and dusk, making these prime strike windows.
Top Spot Recommendation: Fish the Gordon’s Bay to Rooi Els stretch. The False Bay warm water is being pushed up against the coastal mountains, improving water clarity and attracting hungry predators.
Look out for fresh mussels on the sand—a classic indicator of open gullies. The bait of choice? Worms, black mussel, white mussel, prawn, and even the odd chokka strip. Reports from Broken Road and Macassar show good Bellman catches with bonus cob and steenbras in the mix.
Hot Tip from Malcolm King, Chair of the Cape Town Angling Club:
“When the Bellman bites, drop your rod tip and give a bit of slack—they’ll often hook themselves.”
Anglers note fish are feeding surprisingly close in, often just behind the second or third breaker.
Deep-Sea Boat Fishing & Chokka
Chokka are in full force around Kalk Bay, Fish Hoek, and Glencairn, with notable boat-based success near Simon’s Town.
In the deep, the Canyon and Ammo Dump are heating up for tuna, especially Sunday when waters warm from 13°C to 16°C. That said, Saturday’s conditions are still favourable.
Event Wrap: Cape Bream Bonanza
Last Sunday’s Cape Bream Bonanza at the Oceana Power Boat Club in Granger Bay saw 55 crews and 200 anglers hit their limits. Top catch? A 1.5kg bream, with plenty breaching the 1kg mark—Robben Island and several Table Bay spots delivered the goods.
Wind & Conditions Outlook
Expect north-westerlies on Friday and Saturday, shifting to northerlies by Sunday. Wind speeds should taper from nine to five knots by Sunday, promising a manageable ride offshore.
