Yellowtail is heating up, Galjoen are showing up, and freshwater anglers are still in the game
Deep Sea Fishing
Winter hasn’t slowed things down at Cape Point. Despite a cold front over Father’s Day weekend, boats launching from False Bay, Pringle Bay, and Hangklip returned with great catches. Some commercial crews pulled in up to 1000kg of yellowtail in a single day.
Most of these were caught on bait. But for light tackle anglers, it was a fun week using small jigs and spinning gear. Need help choosing the right tackle? Visit Jacita Tackle & Outdoor for expert advice and gear tailored to light jigging.
The West Coast from Robben Island to Dassen Island remains quiet. A few snoek have been landed near St Helena Bay. Conditions are tricky going into the weekend. A big swell is expected on Saturday before dropping on Sunday. Die-hard anglers can still give it a go for a few “Blink Lywe” around St Helena.
Deep Sea Conditions
- Wind: North-west turning to south-west.
- Swell: 4 metres on Saturday, easing to 2 metres on Sunday.
Rock and Surf Fishing
It’s been a classic winter week on the coastline. The swell picked up, but Galjoen were still landed along the False Bay stretch. Early in the week, it brought calm seas and some blacktail. Weekend conditions look rough, but winter fishers know this is prime Galjoen time.
From Cape Town to Hangklip, Galjoen are biting. Bring red bait, white mussels, or worms. These fish are exclusive to winter and well worth targeting for those who enjoy a challenge.
Freshwater Fishing
Winter rains are slowly arriving. Dam levels are expected to improve over the coming weeks as we approach the summer fishing season.
In the meantime, you can still target Carp and Barbel at Brandvlei, Kwaggaskloof, and Theewaterskloof. All three dams are within easy reach of Cape Town. Jacita Tackle & Outdoor stocks all the rods, reels, rigs, and bait you’ll need.
Trout fishing is another option. Le Ferme in Franschhoek remains a top spot for fly anglers during the colder months.
Stywe Lyne
Yellowtail are on, Galjoen are biting, and dam fishing is holding steady. Whether you fish offshore, off the rocks, or in the dams, winter has plenty to offer.
