Fishing report week 27 – 28 June – 2 July 2025
Western Cape fishing update
Deep-sea fishing
Winter continues to flex its muscles along the Cape coast with big swells and icy mornings. Most vessels stayed moored as conditions remained rough throughout the week. A few experienced crews managed to slip out near Cape Point during lighter spells and picked up snoek and the occasional yellowtail closer to Buffels. Looking ahead, the next real gap for deep-sea fishing appears to be Monday or Tuesday, with the swell expected to drop below 3 metres and winds turning more favourable.
Keep an eye on Rocky Bank and Bellows Rock where yellowtail are known to show up in early July. Planning your next offshore trip? Visit jacita.co.za for deep-sea essentials including Shimano Tiagra reels, Grinder Braid, Rapala trolling lures and all your terminal tackle.
Rock and surf fishing
Winter surf fishing is in full swing across the False Bay coast. Despite cold winds and heavy swells, dedicated anglers were rewarded with good catches of galjoen, blacktail and the odd early steenbras. Macassar, Strandfontein and Pringle Bay delivered the best results with red bait and white mussel being the top-performing baits.
Rooiels also produced a few fat galjoen for those willing to brave the rocks during low tide. Time to restock your hooks, sinkers and bait rigs? Jacita has a full range of rock and surf gear for the winter season. Shop online anytime.
Freshwater fishing
The Western Cape’s dams are slowly filling after solid winter rainfall. This is great news for the long term, but short-term freshwater fishing has been a bit slow due to muddy, cold water conditions. La Ferme remains the standout venue, with consistently high rainbow trout catches. Anglers using slow-sink lines and small black or orange flies have found the most success, especially in the warmer midday hours.
For fly anglers looking to stock up on new lines, trout flies, or strike indicators, jacita.co.za has you covered.
