Saltwater & Freshwater Fishing – Fishing Report: 21–25 July

What’s Biting & Where to Cast Your Line This Weekend

Winter might still be here, but the fish haven’t gone anywhere! Whether you’re planning a deep-sea adventure, a quick rock and surf session, or a freshwater escape, we’ve got your weekend fishing forecast, and a reminder that you can stock up on all your fishing tackle at Jacita.co.za with Payflex, so you can pay later but fish now.

Deep Sea Fishing – Yellowtail, Katonkel and… Tuna Hopes?

It’s been a quiet one for ski boat fishing around Cape Point and False Bay. But those unexpected early southeasterly winds have anglers buzzing; could it be a sign of an early tuna season? Only time (and tide) will tell.

Hotspot to watch:

  • Dassen Island is still giving up some solid yellowtail and katonkel, especially around Pike Rock and Protea Reef.
  • Best bets: Try baiting with pike, squid, or pilchards, solid go-tos when trolling goes quiet.

Best days to head out:

  • Friday and Saturday: Uncomfortable SE winds forecasted.
  • Sunday is your winner, with light E/SE winds and a mellow swell, making for a much better outing.

Other notes:

  • Robben Island has been quiet, but Sunday’s conditions could tempt some katonkel out near Whale Rock, plus opportunities for Cape Bream on the bottom.

Rock & Surf Fishing – Galjoen Galore

Cold fronts? No problem. The shoreline is still producing! False Bay is delivering galjoen from Strandfontein Pavilion to Gansbaai, and even as far as Struisbaai.

Best day:

  • Saturday looks prime with big onshore swells, perfect for galjoen.

Sunday tip:

  • With lighter SE winds and a smaller 1.5m swell, belman might show up in the Strand area. Don’t forget your moonshine worm.

Freshwater Fishing – Trout & Travel

Bass news: We’re wishing the SABAA Presidents Bass Team the best of luck as they head to Biri Dam in Zimbabwe. Tight lines and bring that trophy home!

Trout fishing scene:

  • Cold, wet weather still favours trout fishing.
  • La Ferme in Franschhoek is the public go-to, though limited rods are allowed—so call ahead before you make the trip.
