Fishing Reports

Western Cape Fishing Report: 28 July – 3 August 2025

Deep Sea Fishing: Yellowtail at Seal Island and SW Reef

Despite rough conditions midweek, there were solid yellowtail reports around Seal Island in False Bay. Anglers who ventured out to the SW Reef area earlier in the week managed to land a few more tails before the wind picked up. By Wednesday, the weather around Cape Point turned hostile with 35-knot winds and swells peaking at 5 metres.

Saturday looks like your best window for deep-sea action. Forecasts predict 10-knot winds and a swell dropping to 1.5 metres — worth taking the rods out before the next cold front moves in. Sunday’s conditions, however, show winds ramping up to 25 knots again, so it’s best to stay shorebound.

If you’re chasing katonkel, Robben Island could be a good call on Saturday, especially for kayak anglers. Trolling small X-Rap lures or spinning with flashy metals should increase your odds of success.

Rock & Surf: Galjoen and Belman Opportunities

Flat seas along the False Bay coast made for a slow week, though some small galjoen and blacktail were caught near Macassar. Looking ahead, Thursday’s strong offshore winds and rising inshore swells could bring improved galjoen conditions.

Saturday’s light E/NE wind and small swell could be ideal for belman near Sandy Bay, especially with fresh worm. Sunday brings strong N/NW winds again, so make your move before the weather shuts things down.

Freshwater: Wet and Cold Across the Board

Recent rainfall has muddied conditions and dropped water temperatures, keeping most freshwater anglers at home. For the die-hards, La Ferme in Franschhoek remains a reliable fly fishing option, though limited rods are available. Call ahead before heading out.
